It´s true that Similan is a place with great possibilities to see Manta Rays (Manta birostris) when it´s their season. Koh Bon can guarantee you the most encounters with these animals in the National Park.

Manta birostris

The Manta season is from mid-October to mid-May, although it may be better between January and April. This is because the ocean currents bring nutrients, which feed the mantas.

During the cleaning season, mantas approach a specific dive site called "West Ridge". This site is characterized by its currents, which are essential for cleaning parasites on mantas. This also applies to other large pelagics, such as whale sharks.

There are two types of mantas, the reef manta (Manta alfredi) and the oceanic (Manta birostris). They have different habitats; the reef manta is seen in coral reefs, whereas the oceanic is only found in open water. So although you won´t see them at the same site, you can spot both species around the same area. The mantas are always moving so that they can breathe.

Each manta has a pattern of spots on their underside that make them unique; this is their "fingerprint". If you have the opportunity to take a photo of this, it would be very helpful to send it to "Manta Matcher" and help scientists follow the manta´s migrations. You could even discover a new individual and name it. More information in the link: https://www.mantamatcher.org/

One thing to keep in mind is that you can never guarantee any encounter while diving. The sea is very big and it's about wildlife, don´t be disappointed if you are not lucky and don´t see mantas. Enjoy the immersion and wonderful riches Koh Bon has.

Reef coral (Genus Montipora)

"Hin Luang" is the next dive site you cannot miss. It´s a pinnacle about 300m away from the coast, ranging from 18 m to 35/40m deep. The translation of Thai means "yellow mountain" because it´s covered by soft corals of the same color. Being so far from the coast, it´s common to find currents here. This factor, together with the depth of the dive, makes it necessary for you to have advanced certification.

Zebra Shark (Stegostoma fasciatum)

You may also see turtles, eagle rays, leopard sharks or other types of reef sharks. Each dive will always be different.

See you in the blue
