We planned a mini trip to the northwest of Bali, specifically to the Tulamben village, famous for its macro diving and the USAT Liberty Wreck; a cargo ship from the United States Army torpedoed by Japanese submarine I-166 in January 1942 and stranded on the coast.

Harlequin shrimp (Hymenocera picta)

To get to Tulamben from Gili Trawangan (Lombok) you can go by speedboat. The boat arrives at Amed´s pier, the neighboring town.

You can rent a motorcycle upon arrival in Amed for 50,000 IDR per day. To go from Amed to Tulamben by motorcycle it takes about half an hour.

The good thing about diving in this area is that you can rent very cheap tanks (50,000 IDR) if you have the rest of your diving equipment and can dive on your own. We went there with one goal; to take pictures of Periclimenes imperator, a shrimp that lives in symbiosis with other organisms. So we decided to do the first dive with a guide. Almost all the guides are local and they are very good, knowing where to find everything underwater.

Longhorn cowfish (Lactoria cornuta)

Around this area, dive sites are reached from the shore, so no boats are used. All the diving is "Muck diving,´´ which means you´ll be looking for macro in the mud. Though the name doesn´t seem very attractive, I assure you´re jaw will drop seeing creatures you´ve never seen before. From frogfish comparable to the size of a pinky nail, nudibranchs with details you cannot appreciate until you zoom in on a photo, and even animals that mimic their environment in a surprising way. Our chosen dive spot was "Seraya" and as we expected, we didn´t leave disappointed.

After that first dive, we did the rest of our dives on our own, renting tanks and going whenever we wanted on bikes with all our gear.

The conclusion of this expedition is that we will return without a doubt, to continue exploring this area and its dive sites. Maybe we´ll change the macro lens for a wide lens and capture different images, to show you more wonders hidden under water.

See you in the blue
